What is Net Zero?

It is the balance between the amount of carbon dioxide produced and the amount removed from the atmosphere. Net Zero is achieved when the amount we add is equal to the amount taken away.

Why is it important?

Not only is it more sustainable for the economy, but in June 2019 the government passed legislation committing it to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. (Source) This was recommended by the Committee on Climate Change, the UK’s independent climate advisory body.

How is Net Zero Achieved?

It is all about finding the balance, by working out the energy consumed and reducing. Then focusing on generating energy to match the consumed. To achieve net zero by 2050, time and thought needs to be put in place. It is not something that can happen overnight.
QuinnRoss Energy have created a strategy called “LEAD”, which highlights four key steps to help you on your way to net zero.

LEAD

Look – By assessing and reviewing the carbon emissions emitted by each building end use.

Erase – Minimize or eliminate entirely the largest carbon emitting end uses.

Action – Once CO2 has been reduced or removed, it is time to implement measures to generate energy back into the grid, most likely through renewable technology.

Duration – Once net zero is theoretically achieved, continued monitoring and assessment is needed over the assets life to ensure energy and CO2 remain balanced and consistent.
